Clinic Expands To Meet Needs of Indian River County
 Volume 1, Issue 1

Sunshine Physical Therapy Clinic has grown tremendously over the past 5 years.  Growth has been seen in all program areas, including Physical and Massage Therapy and Personal Fitness Programs. Occupational Therapy, which specializing in hand therapy was added in 2003.  Our Personal Fitness Program now includes an Assisted Program and Personal Training.

Due to this growth, plans began in 2004 to expand our building. The Clinic had a long-term lease with the county for the land upon which the building sits, and the county was approached to extend the lease. The land was purchased in mid-2005 .

Plans for the expansion began in earnest.  Ann Bryant, Vice President of the Board of Directors, designed the addition, and the final design by EDB Architects was submitted for permis.  A ground-breaking ceremony was held on July 20th, with the Board, representatives from EDB, MBV Engineering and Chilberg Construction attending.  Construction has not officially begun.

We are adding a brand new wing, with 2 sound-proof Massage Suites; a large multi-purpose exercise and education room; and staff and accounting office space.

Additionally, space will be added to the existing Fitness Gym, and Occupational Therapy will move into a much larger (and much needed) treatment area.

Lights will be added to the existing parking areas, the the current employee parking area will be paved.

    Meet the Board

Ann Bryant initially became acquainted with Sunshine as a member of the Personal Fitness Program.  She was so impressed with the Mission of the Clinic that she joined the Board of Directors in 2000, and currently serves as Vice President.

She is originally from New Jersey, and holds a BFA in interior Design from Syracuse Univ.  She worked as a draftsman, Office Manager and bookkeeper for a Municipal Engineer for thirty years prior to her retirement to Florida in 1988.

Her skills as a draftsman were put to good use as she designed the initial plans for the Clinic expansion.  The quality of her drawings was exceptional, and the architectural firm mentioned her skills frequently.   She designed a scale model of the new wing, which includes working doors and landscaping.

Ann is frequently seen in the Clinic, and always has a smile for everyone.  You may see her in a pink hard hat overseeing the con--struction over the next few months.

8 Great Rewards of Exercise
All fitness programs should include heart-pumping types of activities, like brisk walking, swimming, or stationary cycling.  You should exercise at a pace that maderatly elevates your heart and breathing rates, aiming for a miniumum of 30 minutes 5 times per week of sustained activity.  Aerobic exercise (with oxygen) can increase your ability to efficiently use oxygen, plus it can build stamina and control weight.  Many health benefits are derived from regular exercise, including a general improvement in well-being.  Specifically, exercise can help to prevent bone thinning (osteoporosis), strengthen and tone muscles, improve digestion, improve the efficiency of your heart and lungs, improve posture and balance and help to manage stress.  With all of these benefits, it is still difficult to convince people of the importance of regular exercise.  It is easy to use excuses such as too little time, work fatigue, no equipment available, too hot, too cold, etc., but those who pursue a regular physical fitness program actually find renewed strength and stamina, which provides the energy needed to accomplish their daily tasks.  Following are 8 GREAT rewards:

1) Strengthens your heart.  People who exercise aerobically on a reular basis reduce their risk of heart attack by as much as 50%.

2) Protects against cancer.  Colon cancer is at least 50% more common in people who lead sedentary (low-activity) lives.

3) Fights bone loss.  Lack of exercise can lead to osteoporosis.  Weight-bearing exercise can slow the loss of bone density and strength.

4) Keeps the pounds off.  Daily exercise can riase your metabolism, which can help to trim excess body fat.

5) Prevents diabetes.  The more active people are, the lower their risk of Type II diabetes.

6) Relieves depression.  Exercise serves as a healthy release for anger, frustration and anxiety.

7) Promotes deeper sleep.  Regular exercisers generally fall asleep more quickly and sleep more soundly.

8) Boosts brain power.  Aerobic exercise increases blood flow to the brain, which can improve memory, increase the ability to learn and concewntrate and enhance creativity.

Fundraising Underway For Expansion Plans

Sunshine Physical Therapy Clinic, a non-profit 501c(3), is seeking donations to assist with expansion of the building.  All donations are tax-deductible, and will help the Clinic with the purchase of much needed furniture and equipment in the new areas.  Major gifts offer a 'naming' opportunity, allowing the donor to be permanently recognized for their generosity.  Gifts of any size can be made by cash, check, or credit card.  A tax receipt will be provided for your records.  Ongoing donations are required to underwrite care for those individuals who would otherwise go without the treatment necessary to return them to their required level of function.  Additional Community Service performed by Sunshine Physical Therapy Clinic includes:

 Student Athlete care at VBHS
Character Counts annual ceremony at Dodgertown
  Dollars for Scholars Annual Scholarship
  Community Education/Lectures on health-related topics
Osteoporosis Education at IRC Elementary Schools
Leading Parkinson's Support Group weekly exercise class

A donation to Sunshine Physical Therapy Clinic is guaranteed to make a difference—in the ability of a husband to support his family by returning to work following injury; a mother to lift her baby following back surgery; or a child to return to the playing field following knee ligament reconstruction.  Your generous donation will be used towards our expansion, or to underwrite services to those in need.   Thank you for your support!

We want to take this opportunity to thank our past donors.

Your generosity has helped us better serve the residents of the Treasure Coast.

We look forward to working with you in the future, as we expand and fund future programs.

Staff Spotlight

Dale Ruiter, PT

Dale Ruiter joined the clinical staff at Sunshine in 2000.  Having recently moved to Melbourne Beach, he was looking for a Clinic to call 'home' and found it at Sunshine.  Dale is a graduate of the Mayo Foundation School of Physical Therapy, and worked at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota for 5 years following graduation.  He then moved on to a management position in a hospital-based PT program, until he opened his own private practice in 1985.  In 1996 he sold his practice and began to make plans to move to Florida.

Dale approaches each patient with respect and enthusiasm.   His wealth of knowledge and experience benefits all with whom he comes in contact.  He believes education is paramount in treating patients, and takes the time to ensure that his patients understand what is happening, and what to expect.

Dale and his wife Cindy are the proud parents of two children.  In his spare time, he like to ride his motorcycle, and enjoy family visits, good friends and good food!
